Update coming to 3DS to allow you to merge 3DS and Wii U balances

One of the things Nintendo fans have been asking for since Nintendo Network ID released for the Wii U is the ability to merge Nintendo 3DS content with Wii U content, similar to how Sony handles some content between the PS3/PS4 and the PS Vita. While that sort of integration isn’t coming just yet, Nintendo did announce today that an update for the Nintendo 3DS is coming that will allow you to register your Nintendo Network ID on the Nintendo 3DS and any balance you have there will be combined with your Wii U balance.

This balance merger is a step in the right direction for getting a unified account system on the Nintendo 3DS, as you can buy Nintendo eShop Gift Cards and have the funds available in both locations now. Hopefully we’ll see some sort of virtual console crossover soon enough.
