Discover The Basic Functions Of MS Excel Programming

By Dorothy Nelson

Excel is a popular and highly useful spreadsheet software developed by Microsoft, thirty years ago. Since it was first created and launched, it has gone through a vast number of updates and changes into the program people know now. Even though it has been around for a long time now, it continues to be the most widely used software for this specific purpose.

Due to this, the program is widely used in a number of applications. Numerous offices, businesses, and schools use it daily to store and compute vital information regarding their operations. If you would like to learn how to use it, below is an introduction to the basics in MS Excel Programming that you should know.

Begin by turning on your personal computer and clicking it open via the shortcut in the desktop. If it is not there, simply open your program files folder and select it from there. Once it has loaded, use the new file button to create a new file that loads up to a new workbook.

Familiarize yourself with all the features first before diving head first into your task or assignment. Upon loading, you will realize there are numerous buttons and features available. Do not let this overwhelm you because you will eventually master all these functions after a few weeks of frequent usage. Explore each tab by hovering the mouse over it and observing what kind of changes each one brings.

Much like other programs, this makes use of a certain language or labels for each tool. By reading up and learning these labels, you will better understand how it works. A basic label is called the cell and this highlights each box you see below where information is typed in. The rows on top are labeled by numbers, while letters are used to label the columns on the left side of the screen.

At the bottom portion, you will notice there are three available worksheets for you to work on. This is determined by default but you have the option of adding as many as you would like to for your project. To avoid confusion when working on large scaled projects, rename each one to the appropriate label.

Once you start working, consider adding a title for each cell. This makes it easier for you to identify the purpose for each one because you have labeled it properly. When you want to make changes with regard to its label, you are able to easily do so by clicking on it once more.

Once you start to make some real progress on your project, you have to learn how to save it properly. This is highly important and you should never forget to do so, or else you risk losing the progress you have done. Clicking on the save button will prompt you to choose which folder to save it to and gives you the opportunity to name it properly.

When using this program, always remember to save constantly. This prevents you from losing progress, especially when the power suddenly turns off or the software crashes. A useful keyboard shortcut is combining the control button with the S one.
